Aftercare Basics

Aftercare is essential—for everyone involved.

What is Aftercare?

Aftercare refers to the attention and care given to all participants after a scene or intense experience:

  • It helps regulate the nervous system
  • It prevents emotional crashes
  • It builds connection and trust
  • It's a time for gentle re-grounding

Common Aftercare Needs

Physical

  • Water and snacks
  • Blankets or warmth
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Gentle touch (if welcome)
  • Rest

Emotional

  • Reassurance and praise
  • Quiet presence
  • Processing conversation (not critique)
  • Check-ins the next day
  • Space if needed

Planning Your Aftercare

Questions to consider:

  • What helps you feel safe after intensity?
  • Do you need physical closeness or space?
  • How soon after do you need to debrief?
  • What do you need the next day?

Create an Aftercare Card to share your needs with partners.
